The first tale from Ancestors and Descendants -Lovecraftian Prequels and Sequels is the editor's own tale The Events at Exam Priory. Not surprisingly it details events around Lovecraft's Rats in the Walls from 1923. It's not until the very end and the attempt at a twist ending that it becomes clear that the short story is a prequel.
Just like the original source material an ancestor of the de la Poer's inherits Exam Priory, but this time it is a young child. Instead of being dragged into a cannibalistic frenzy cause by rats scratching the walls external forces act to convince him to take up his ancestors vile traditions.
It is easy to see what R. Poyton is trying to do and the angle he is going for. It lacks originality at times and is far too short to ever grab the reader. It sets a low standard going in to the collection, but on the other hand it can only get better from here.
