Review: New World by Aditya Deshmukh

Author: Aditya Deshmukh

Genre: Science Fiction

New World is part of the All World series. A Science Fiction epic from the imagination of author Aditya Deshmukh. New World tells the tale of the solitary Uru who is stranded on the remnants of a desolate Earth. After having conquered Mars a small portion of humanity has escaped the dying Earth to build their homes in space. Those left behind fend for themselves on the grey planet subject to the whims of the Martians. Uru has a dream to become more than what she has been born into and concocts a way to do so, but it is not without its perils.

New World is in almost every aspect a true Science Fiction tale. Not only due to the setting of a dying Earth or the colonization of Mars. It is intrinsically linked to our time and oft comments on it both directly and clandestine. The poverty stricken Earth with its myriad over underprivileged citizens is reminiscent of the will of Man to classify people. There is an innate will to awaken the discussion that no matter how far we come, no matter how advanced we believe we become we will never escape the need to put some people above others. What Aditya Deshmukh shrewdly realizes is that coupled with the oppression of an entire group a will to pull ones self out of the mire is needed. Uru becomes the solitary voice of an entire underprivileged group yearning to better themselves. There is a sense that New World is one of polar opposites. Those who have resigned to there lot in life and those who believe that change is possible. In the same way there is a clear juxtaposition between the spoiled childish Martians who get their jollies from using the people of Earth as mere play things and the Earthlings who in many ways are oblivious to the fact that they are being used. The parallels to rich Europeans venturing into Southeast Asia in order to enjoy cheap food and drink on the backs of oppressed people is not to difficult to see.

In the end New World is an excellent first introduction to the dark and dismal world that Deshmukh has in store for the readers. It makes them eager to read the following installments and the desire that drives Uru towards a better existence is mirrored in us all.
